(Fort McMurray, AB - March 15th, 2024) In an exciting development for inclusive sports engagement, Christina Gordon Public School and Dr. Clark Public School have been selected to participate in the esteemed Toronto Blue Jays Affiliate School program. This partnership marks a significant step towards fostering an inclusive sports culture that aligns seamlessly with the values of empowerment, belongingness, and active participation among students of varying abilities and interests.

Christina Gordon Public School is set to launch the "Girls at Bat" program, specifically designed to empower and centre the leadership of self-identified girls facing barriers to sports participation. The introduction of this program has generated considerable excitement among students and garnered strong support from staff, encouraging widespread involvement. This 8-week after-school program will focus on building connection, courage, leadership, and a love for sport, offering students an invaluable platform for personal growth and community engagement.

Christina Gordon Public School Teacher Lindsey Greatrix hopes the program helps foster increased confidence in sports for many female students.

"I have loved baseball in all its forms since I was young, and I am excited to share my passion for the sport in a way that empowers my students. I aim to provide opportunities to ignite a passion for baseball while fostering a safe and welcoming space for them to try new things.

Taking a step further in creating inclusive sports opportunities, Dr. Clark Public School has embraced the Challenger Baseball program. This initiative aims to empower children and youth with cognitive and physical disabilities by offering an adaptive baseball or softball experience tailored to their unique needs and strengths. Challenger Baseball will provide a supportive environment where participants can build connections, foster independence, and develop a lifelong appreciation for physical activity, all while experiencing the joy of being part of a team.

Dr Clark LAC Hilary Banks says the school is "beyond excited to become a Jay's Affiliate School".

"We are removing barriers and providing access to organized sports for our neurodiverse population of students. Engaging in the program will provide our neurodivergent students equal access to team sports and an excellent leadership opportunity for their neurotypical peers.

The Toronto Blue Jays Affiliate School program, supported by the Jays Care Foundation, is dedicated to levelling the playing field for children and youth across Canada, particularly those from underserved communities. By collaborating with schools like Christina Gordon and Dr. Clark Public Schools, the Jays Care Foundation seeks to narrow the opportunity gap through structured baseball programming, emphasizing inclusion, empowerment, and active participation.

Through the incorporation of Girls at Bat and Challenger Baseball, Christina Gordon and Dr. Clark Public Schools promote physical activity and instil vital life skills among students. The programs' unique focus areas, ranging from courage and leadership to independence and belonging, underscore the holistic benefits of sports participation.

Both schools have committed to an 8-week baseball module, with the freedom to adapt the program to suit their students' needs best, whether during after-school hours, lunch periods, or class time. The Jays Care Foundation will provide all necessary training, equipment, and resources to ensure the success of these programs.

This partnership between Christina Gordon Public School, Dr. Clark Public School, and the Toronto Blue Jays illustrates a shared commitment to fostering an inclusive community where every student, regardless of ability or identity, can shine both on and off the field.
