Dear Parents and Guardians,
The Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMPSD) is reaching out to provide an important update regarding the ongoing labour negotiations between the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) and the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA).
The ATA has completed its vote and rejected the tentative agreement reached last week. As a result, the previously announced notice for a strike set to begin Monday, October 6, 2025, remains in effect.
School Closures and Bus Routes
At this time, all schools will be closed to students starting Monday, October 6, 2025, unless a new agreement is reached or strike action is otherwise averted. Additionally, all yellow school bus routes will be suspended for the duration of the strike. As there is no definitive end date for the strike, FMPSD is unable to provide a timeline for when normal operations will resume. We will continue to provide timely updates as we receive them from the Ministry of Education and Child Care.
Extra-curricular activities
In light of the ongoing strike, all extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, and after-school programs, will be temporarily suspended. This decision ensures the safety and well-being of all students and staff during this period. We understand the importance of these activities in fostering growth and community, and we are committed to resuming them as soon as the strike concludes.
Instructional Time and Contingency Plans
We understand that parents may have questions about whether instructional time will be made up after the strike. This will depend on the duration of the strike, and FMPSD will share any updates or guidance received from the Ministry of Education and Child Care as soon as it becomes available. The Division is actively reviewing and updating contingency plans to ensure we meet our obligations as a school board.
Teacher and School Administrator Accessibility
Please note that during the strike, teachers and school administrators will not be accessible. Alberta Education and Child Care will provide guidance and support to all school boards, including FMPSD, to ensure families are kept informed and appropriate measures are implemented.
Support for Families
The Alberta government has provided financial assistance and educational resources for families during the strike. For more information, please visit: https://www.alberta.ca/release.cfm?xID=9401515033BD2-C28F-D1D4-DC654FCB050863F4.
