ATA Strike Commencing on Monday; School Closures Starting Oct 6th

As a result of the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) rejecting a proposed deal from the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA), all FMPSD schools will be closed to students starting Monday, October 6, 2025, unless a new agreement is reached or strike action is otherwise averted. Additionally, all yellow school bus routes will be suspended for the duration of the strike.

In light of the ongoing strike, all extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, and after-school programs, will be temporarily suspended.

As there is no definitive end date for the strike, FMPSD is unable to provide a timeline for when normal operations will resume. We will continue to provide timely updates as we receive them from the Ministry of Education and Child Care.

Update on Provincial Labour Negotiations with the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA)

Posted on: General News

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMPSD) is reaching out to provide an important update regarding the ongoing labour negotiations between the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) and the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA).

Earlier today, the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) announced they had received a letter from the Government of Alberta proposing a return back to work on Monday, October 20th, 2025, while continuing with an ‘enhanced mediation” process. The proposal was to end the strike and lockout, allowing students to go back to school while the enhanced mediation would continue. The ATA have declined the proposal and will remain on strike.

In light of the ongoing labor action the Government of Alberta has made November 2025 diploma exams optional for students. Students who wish to write a diploma exam may request to do so:

  • The optional diploma exams apply to all schools provincewide. These exams will still take place on the currently scheduled dates.
  • Students who choose not to write the November diploma exams can still complete their courses and graduate on time. Their final grade will be based entirely on the school-awarded mark provided by their teacher.
  • Choosing not to write the November diploma exams will not affect a student’s ability to apply to, be accepted by, or attend post-secondary institutions after graduation.
  • No changes have been made to the January and June diplomas and provincial achievement tests.

At this time, all schools will remain closed, and all yellow school bus routes will remain suspended until further notice. As there is no definitive end date, FMPSD is unable to provide a timeline for when normal operations will resume. We will continue to provide timely updates as we receive them from the Ministry of Education and Child Care.

The Alberta government has provided financial assistance and educational resources for families during the strike. For more information, please visit: https://www.alberta.ca/release.cfm?xID=9401515033BD2-C28F-D1D4-DC654FCB050863F4.
