ATA Strike Commencing on Monday; School Closures Starting Oct 6th

As a result of the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) rejecting a proposed deal from the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA), all FMPSD schools will be closed to students starting Monday, October 6, 2025, unless a new agreement is reached or strike action is otherwise averted. Additionally, all yellow school bus routes will be suspended for the duration of the strike.

In light of the ongoing strike, all extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, and after-school programs, will be temporarily suspended.

As there is no definitive end date for the strike, FMPSD is unable to provide a timeline for when normal operations will resume. We will continue to provide timely updates as we receive them from the Ministry of Education and Child Care.

Update on Provincial Labour Negotiations with the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA)

Posted on: General News News Release

(Fort McMurray, AB - June 10th, 2025) Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are writing to inform you about the recent developments regarding the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) strike vote. Members of the ATA have voted in favour of a strike, and they are now in a position to initiate one with 72 hours’ notice.

The Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) continues to negotiate with the ATA in the hopes of avoiding any disruption and more bargaining dates are scheduled for this month as well as August.

The Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMPSD) is currently reviewing and updating our contingency plans to ensure our school board obligations are met. Should a strike proceed, Alberta Education and Childcare will provide guidance and support to all school boards, including FMPSD, to ensure families are kept informed and proper measures are taken.

We understand that this situation may bring uncertainty, and we are committed to keeping you informed with timely updates as they become available. We appreciate your understanding and support as we work through this matter.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
