Doing What’s Best for Kids

ATA Strike Commencing on Monday; School Closures Starting Oct 6th

As a result of the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) rejecting a proposed deal from the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA), all FMPSD schools will be closed to students starting Monday, October 6, 2025, unless a new agreement is reached or strike action is otherwise averted. Additionally, all yellow school bus routes will be suspended for the duration of the strike.

In light of the ongoing strike, all extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, and after-school programs, will be temporarily suspended.

As there is no definitive end date for the strike, FMPSD is unable to provide a timeline for when normal operations will resume. We will continue to provide timely updates as we receive them from the Ministry of Education and Child Care.

Posted on: General News

(Fort McMurray, AB - August 25th, 2023) Sniti Shah, a Grade 3 Walter & Gladys Hill student, has made her school and community proud by winning the Grand Champion trophy, Grade 3 category medal, and two certificates at the International ALOHA Math competition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The competition saw the participation of about 600 kids from 16 different countries.

Sniti’s success at the competition results from her hard work and dedication to learning math, which she has shown since Fall 2020 when she first registered with ALOHA Center in Fort McMurray. Her parents played an essential role in encouraging her interest in math. Her ALOHA mentors and her teachers at school have all assisted her in becoming a champion.

Sniti’s achievements are not limited to international competition. She has consistently won at local competitions organized annually by ALOHA Center, having been awarded the Grand Champion title for the past three years.

In an interview, Sniti expressed her happiness in being placed as the Grand Champion at the international level. She mentioned that winning the competition has further boosted her confidence, and she is extremely thankful to the people who have supported her in her journey. The achievement has also motivated her to continue learning and practising math, with dreams of pursuing a career when she grows up.

Sniti’s success reflects the quality of education and support students in Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMSPD) receive. Sniti’s recent victory is a source of pride for Walter & Gladys Hill School, her family and her community and a reaffirmation of FMPSD students’ opportunities to excel academically and showcase their talents to the world.

Congratulations Sniti!
