Doing What’s Best for Kids

ATA Strike Commencing on Monday; School Closures Starting Oct 6th

As a result of the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) rejecting a proposed deal from the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA), all FMPSD schools will be closed to students starting Monday, October 6, 2025, unless a new agreement is reached or strike action is otherwise averted. Additionally, all yellow school bus routes will be suspended for the duration of the strike.

In light of the ongoing strike, all extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, and after-school programs, will be temporarily suspended.

As there is no definitive end date for the strike, FMPSD is unable to provide a timeline for when normal operations will resume. We will continue to provide timely updates as we receive them from the Ministry of Education and Child Care.

Greely Road Grade 5/6 Students Present Skatepark Proposal To Municipal Council

Posted on: General News

(Fort McMurray, AB - March 31st, 2023) On Tuesday night, a group of ambitious grade 5/6 students from Greely Road Public School presented at the March RMWB Council meeting with an innovative proposal to construct a local skatepark in Gregoire. Students noted that local kids were at risk of missing out on fun activities due to distance, cost or safety concerns, so they put forward their plans. Not only would this provide additional places for play, but it could also help foster stronger connections between residents and build upon existing community spirit. With reasons ranging from lack of transport options downtown to current skating areas being deemed unsafe by parents, Greely Road students saw it as their responsibility to create more recreational choices closer to home.

The proposed skatepark was designed with community members in mind. It would provide a variety of amenities to beautify the area while encouraging kids to get outside and partake in physical exercise. Students also proposed that features of the skatepark could include rental equipment for skating activities, jumps, pipes and rails surrounded by vibrant decorations, all within easy reach of the local community.

Greely Road School's Principal, Chris Organ, was astounded by his students' ambitiousness and proactivity to present community initiatives on a municipal level.

"To have our grade 5/6 students, led by Mr. Ueffing, show pride in their community and take the lead on proposing a skatepark for all to enjoy shows how well our students can relate their curriculum to everyday life. We are so proud of our students for taking this challenge head-on and thankful to Mayor Bowmen and the city council for hearing our proposal. Greely Road School may be a smaller school, but our students do great things."
