ATA Strike Commencing on Monday; School Closures Starting Oct 6th

As a result of the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) rejecting a proposed deal from the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA), all FMPSD schools will be closed to students starting Monday, October 6, 2025, unless a new agreement is reached or strike action is otherwise averted. Additionally, all yellow school bus routes will be suspended for the duration of the strike.

In light of the ongoing strike, all extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, and after-school programs, will be temporarily suspended.

As there is no definitive end date for the strike, FMPSD is unable to provide a timeline for when normal operations will resume. We will continue to provide timely updates as we receive them from the Ministry of Education and Child Care.

FMPSD's 11th Annual Robotics Tournament Recap

Posted on: General News

(Fort McMurray, AB - June 19th, 2024) On June 8th, 2024, the Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMPSD) held its highly anticipated 11th Annual Robotics Tournament. This year’s event was a resounding success, showcasing the growing enthusiasm for robotics and STEM education within our community.

This year, the tournament saw an impressive turnout, with 38 teams and 190 students from our 10 elementary schools and two junior high schools participating. The audience, estimated at over 200 people, was treated to a day filled with excitement, innovation, and intense competition.

Participants faced 15 challenges on the game mat, each designed to test their engineering skills, strategic thinking, and teamwork. Teams had two minutes and 30 seconds to earn as many points as possible, and the energy in the room was palpable as students raced against the clock.

The participants' enthusiasm was infectious. Ali Syed, FMPSD’s Director of Technology and Robotics Tournament Organizer, remarked, "We were tremendously pleased with the turnout and the amount of energy the students displayed throughout the day. It was very contagious and fed into the positive reactions we experienced in the tournament itself. A few parents wished they could have had this opportunity when they were younger. That was the greatest compliment of the day!"
