FMPSD Teacher Recognized for National STEM-Teaching Award

Posted on: News Release

(Fort McMurray, AB - October 27th, 2022) FMPSD is committed to providing students with a well-rounded education that includes academic and practical skills. STEM programming allows students to learn about essential science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through hands-on activities and real-world application. These skills are essential for success in today's world, and we are proud to offer this type of programming in our Division.

Congratulations to Westwood teacher Jeffrey Landry who won the prestigious Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Manufacturing (STEM).

The Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence in STEM recognises inspirational Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics teachers at the elementary or secondary school level who engage students with STEM learning and help develop a culture of innovation in Canada.

Director of Teaching and Learning, Jen Quigley, commends Mr. Landry’s commitment to STEM programming. “The Prime Minister's Certificate of Achievement in STEM is a well-deserved award for Mr. Jeffrey Landry. His dedication and leadership in STEM are woven into his innovative and exemplary teaching practices as he supports students in exploring their interests and enhancing their skills. Mr. Landry cares deeply about students and their development in all areas and uses STEM skills as another connection point with students. Congratulations to a most deserving recipient.“

Sharing this wonder of science with all students in his classroom and fostering in them a love for this vast field with endless opportunities won him a Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

According to the Prime Minister's awards website: “Mr. Landry excels in leading students through his diverse approach to teaching, student development, and bringing new opportunities for positive growth. The support he offers has led students to a plethora of honours, awards, and achievements."

Mr. Landry says he is touched and humbled to have been awarded such a prestigious teaching award.

“I take every opportunity available to build positive connections in my teachings, connections with staff, parents, and most importantly, students. The award's meaning for me goes well beyond the scope of simple day-to-day school operations. It exemplifies my students' drive, dedication, and ownership of their education and daily lives. We work together daily, striving for success from the class to the [badminton] court. Having that like mindset is the driving force behind all their accomplishments, and I couldn't be prouder. The award is just as much theirs as mine. Their reactions mean the most; knowing they are as proud of me as I am of them brings everything back full circle."

Cynthia Shelley, Director of Inclusive Education and former Westwood principal, says the Prime Minister's Awards for Teaching Excellence is a testament to the hard work and innovation of Mr. Landry.

“Jeff Landry has shown to be a collaborative colleague and a dependable master teacher who is highly motivated to serve students in all areas of school life. Jeff has helped to design and create the WWInov Maker Space at Westwood, the place where students have embraced their passions and earned national recognition for the skills learned in STEM under his guidance and collegial teamwork.  Jeff is versatile and genuinely cares for students, their well-being and their success. He teaches students in a wide range of areas, such as woods/mechanics/welding, Robotics, Digital Design, and high-level math. He is constantly learning in-order to provide more opportunities for students to learn and excel. Jeff is fully committed to everything he becomes involved with, and he engages the students in their learning, no matter the subject. He finds ways to make the subject matter relevant, is appreciated by staff and students, and is always excited to innovate!  He is a coach, an incredible role model, and a valued educator within the Fort McMurray Public School Division. I am so excited for Mr. Landry; I wish him sincere congratulations on earning this incredibly well-deserved recognition."

Westwood Community High School will also receive a certificate signed by the Prime Minister, recognising their support of Mr. Landry's achievement.
