ATA Strike Commencing on Monday; School Closures Starting Oct 6th

As a result of the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) rejecting a proposed deal from the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA), all FMPSD schools will be closed to students starting Monday, October 6, 2025, unless a new agreement is reached or strike action is otherwise averted. Additionally, all yellow school bus routes will be suspended for the duration of the strike.

In light of the ongoing strike, all extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, and after-school programs, will be temporarily suspended.

As there is no definitive end date for the strike, FMPSD is unable to provide a timeline for when normal operations will resume. We will continue to provide timely updates as we receive them from the Ministry of Education and Child Care.

FMPSD Students Win Big At Canada-Wide Science Fair

Posted on: General News

(Fort McMurray, AB - June 14th, 2023) Fort McMurray Public School District (FMPSD) celebrates the outstanding success of Westwood Community High School students Tanya Jivani, Lalithya Raavi, Shayan Awan, and Nishka Rai at the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF) held in Edmonton on May 18, 2023. The students proudly secured the Bronze, Silver, and Challenge Awards.

Tanya Jivani and Lalithya Raavi secured Bronze in the Intermediate category with their project “From Raw to Cooked: Exploring Cooking Methods on Ascorbic Acid Retention in Tomatoes.”

Their project used different cooking methods to test the effects of Vitamin C levels in tomatoes using an iodine potassium iodide test through titration. The experiment was conducted to understand better how daily food preparation through cooking can affect vitamin consumption and absorption.

Grade 10 student Nishka Rai received Silver in the Intermediate category and a Health and Wellness Challenge Award for her project “F.R.O.S.T. - Frostbite Risk Observation & Safe Technology.”

The project was created as an accurate frostbite alert system to alert users of potential frostbite risks. Using data from changes in the temperature and the time corresponding to the temperature levels, the system provides timely, accurate warnings to users, enabling them to take appropriate measures to protect themselves.

With his “TM&R Band: Age with Confidence” project, Shayan Awan received a Silver award in the Intermediate category.

Shayan’s project featured machine learning and artificial intelligence to analyze motor movements and output signals from Parkinson’s disease patients to reduce tremors accordingly. The non-invasive tremor reduction device that he’s created acts to distract the brain from sending involuntary tremors.

Superintendent Annalee Nutter commends the remarkable success of our FMPSD students at the Canada-Wide Science Fair.

“Once again, we were excited to have students going to the Canada-Wide Science Fair and are very proud of their results. For all students who participate, science fairs provide an opportunity to apply their learned knowledge of the Scientific Method, perfecting their presentation skills and confidence in their understanding of some very complex topics. The added bonus is winning, at any level, with such strong groups of competitors.”

Our students have done an exceptional job representing our region, and we are incredibly proud of their impressive achievements. Their hard work and dedication have rightfully earned them recognition for their outstanding work.

Congratulations to all award winners!
