ATA Strike Commencing on Monday; School Closures Starting Oct 6th

As a result of the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) rejecting a proposed deal from the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA), all FMPSD schools will be closed to students starting Monday, October 6, 2025, unless a new agreement is reached or strike action is otherwise averted. Additionally, all yellow school bus routes will be suspended for the duration of the strike.

In light of the ongoing strike, all extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, and after-school programs, will be temporarily suspended.

As there is no definitive end date for the strike, FMPSD is unable to provide a timeline for when normal operations will resume. We will continue to provide timely updates as we receive them from the Ministry of Education and Child Care.

FMPSD Student appointed to 2023/2024 Minister’s Youth Council

(Fort McMurray, AB - September 5th, 2023) Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMPSD) is excited to announce that Ved Bhowmik, a Grade 11 student from Westwood Community High School, has been selected to join the esteemed 2023/24 Minister's Youth Council.

With 183 applications from junior and senior high school students across Alberta, the competition was undoubtedly wide; still, Ved's impressive application shone through and successively landed him a spot in this exclusive council. As a council member, Ved will be integral to making a difference in the education system and providing valuable student feedback to the Minister of Education. 

We extend our warmest congratulations to Ved on his appointment to the 2023/24 Minister's Youth Council, and we eagerly await the positive contributions he will make towards the council's objectives.
