ATA Strike Commencing on Monday; School Closures Starting Oct 6th

As a result of the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) rejecting a proposed deal from the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA), all FMPSD schools will be closed to students starting Monday, October 6, 2025, unless a new agreement is reached or strike action is otherwise averted. Additionally, all yellow school bus routes will be suspended for the duration of the strike.

In light of the ongoing strike, all extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, and after-school programs, will be temporarily suspended.

As there is no definitive end date for the strike, FMPSD is unable to provide a timeline for when normal operations will resume. We will continue to provide timely updates as we receive them from the Ministry of Education and Child Care.

Posted on: News Release

(Fort McMurray, AB - March 17th, 2025) The Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMPSD) is pleased to announce the successful ratification of a collective agreement with CUPE Local 2545, ensuring the return of our invaluable support staff to schools across the Division.

This agreement represents the dedication of both FMPSD and CUPE Local 2545 to ensuring that schools not only remain operational but thrive through the contributions of our skilled staff. This includes educational assistants, librarians, front office administrative assistants, custodial staff, maintenance staff, technicians, and numerous other essential team members whose efforts make a remarkable difference in the day-to-day success of our schools.

FMPSD Superintendent Annalee Nutter commented, “We are eagerly anticipating the return of our CUPE members to work. More importantly, we are excited to welcome all students back to school, where they can reconnect with their peers and continue their learning journey.”

The finalized deal ensures that all parties are aligned on the path forward, prioritizing students' education and well-being while recognizing the hard work and contributions of our dedicated staff.

FMPSD Board Chair Linda Mywaart also expressed satisfaction with the new agreement, saying, “The Board voted unanimously to accept this agreement because it is best for both the students and the staff. We are thrilled that they will all be back together in the schools very soon. As a Board we will continue to advocate for full funding to meet the costs of providing education here in Fort McMurray.”

With this agreement in place, FMPSD is fully focused on continuing to deliver exceptional educational experiences in the 2024–2025 academic year and beyond.
