(Fort McMurray, AB - May 9th, 2025) Composite High School is shining a spotlight on the exceptional accomplishments of its student leaders who are making a meaningful impact within the school and the wider community. Through innovative events, heartfelt initiatives, and team-driven projects, these students are showcasing the power of leadership, collaboration, and compassion.
Here are some of the noteworthy highlights from this year’s leadership efforts:
Events That Build School Spirit
- The Student Council kicked off the school year with a half-day spirit event in the fall, setting a lively and positive tone for the year.
- Just this month, the council organized a full-day spirit event, featuring fun and engaging activities that brought students and staff together.
- A student-designed Spirit Day T-shirt, proudly worn by the school community, celebrates creativity and unity.
Making a Difference Beyond the Classroom
- The school’s Overnight Wake-a-thon raised over $3,000 in support of the Autism Society, a testament to the students' deep commitment to making a difference.
- Indigenous student leaders played a vital role in the Grade 7 Health Conference, providing guidance and support while strengthening cultural connections. The event also welcomed keynote speaker Grade 12 Daniel Deranger, who delivered an inspiring address and led a meaningful drum-making session for Indigenous students with support from Nistawayou.
- A group of Composite High School students attended the Ignite Science Conference in Calgary, expanding their knowledge and fueling their passion for STEM subjects.
Celebrating Diversity and Connection
- The school proudly hosts multicultural celebrations, including Black History Month, Asian Heritage Month, and Autism Acceptance Month, creating opportunities for learning, respect, and inclusivity.
- Students have embraced lunchtime connection spaces and enjoy spending time in the outdoor classroom, fostering an enriching environment for collaboration and reflection.
- The “Be Kind” mural, currently in progress, is set to be a powerful visual reminder of the school’s values of kindness and inclusivity.
Welcoming & Supporting All Students
- Grade 7 Open House Tours provided younger students with an engaging first look at what makes Composite High such a special place to learn and grow.
- The Secret Appreciation Drive showcased the importance of gratitude, as students took time to thank and support one another in heartfelt ways.
These initiatives highlight the dedication, collaboration, and creativity of Composite High’s student leaders. Their actions demonstrate that leadership is more than titles and roles; it is about creating positive change and inspiring others.
Principal Craig Upper shared, “We have continued to put more students in ownership of what they want, and we try to guide and facilitate it to ensure it aligns with our core values. At Composite High, we are not just building leaders for tomorrow—we are empowering them to lead today.”
