Doing What’s Best for Kids

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Posted on: General News

We are very proud of the work the schools in our system have been doing regarding Truth and Reconciliation, but we still have a long way to go. We have delivered resources to the schools to assist with the Truth portion of educating students about residential schools and treaties. This is a requirement under the Teacher Quality Standards which we highlight with staff. Schools arrange professional learning time dedicated to areas of need to build capacity in our staff in this regard as well.

Each year schools, either collaboratively or as individuals, grades and classrooms determine an action they can work toward for Truth and Reconciliation. There have been some very artistic ways that students have found to create these actions, which are often shared on social media and school news. Last year, one of our Division collaborative groups also established a reconciliation space within Division Office. We are moving slowly and carefully to ensure we are doing things right to honour the spirit of reconciliation.
