Doing What’s Best for Kids

ATA Strike Commencing on Monday; School Closures Starting Oct 6th

As a result of the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) rejecting a proposed deal from the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA), all FMPSD schools will be closed to students starting Monday, October 6, 2025, unless a new agreement is reached or strike action is otherwise averted. Additionally, all yellow school bus routes will be suspended for the duration of the strike.

In light of the ongoing strike, all extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, and after-school programs, will be temporarily suspended.

As there is no definitive end date for the strike, FMPSD is unable to provide a timeline for when normal operations will resume. We will continue to provide timely updates as we receive them from the Ministry of Education and Child Care.

FMPSD's 2023 Edwin Parr Teaching Award Nominees

Posted on:

(Fort McMurray, AB - April 5th, 2023) Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMPSD) congratulates Vyoma Vashi (École Dickinsfield) and Lucas Clarke (École McTavish), who have been selected as the Division’s Edwin Parr Teaching Award nominees.

Superintendent of Schools, Annalee Nutter, details the process of selecting the Division’s nominees.

“The board chooses their Edwin Parr nominee based on criteria required by the Alberta School Board Association (ASBA). The award recognizes excellent first-year teachers across the province; reflecting on teacher quality standards, the board determines a nominee from school leaders’ nominations. Often, it is a very difficult decision to make as we have so many outstanding teachers deserving of this award.”

The ASBA bestows the awards upon a maximum of six teachers, each representing a different provincial zone. School boards may nominate any first-year kindergarten to Grade 12 teacher who has taught in an Alberta school jurisdiction that is a member of the ASBA.

FMPSD is honoured to recognize our nominees and their profound positive impact on their students and schools in a short time. Their dedication to education has not gone unnoticed, as Ms. Vashi carries that same passion into her selection process for the Zone 2/3 award from the ASBA, which will be awarding its recognition this coming May.

Linda Mywaart, FMPSD Board of Trustees Chairperson, warmly extends her congratulations to Ms. Vashi for an incredible accomplishment: being selected as the school board’s Zone 2/3 award nominee.

“Congratulations to Vyoma for being selected as the Edwin Parr nominee for FMPSD. As a new teacher, Vyoma already demonstrates excellence in teaching, and we are so pleased to have her in the school division."

Merrie-Rae Mitsopoulos, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources and Administration, oversaw the selection committee that ultimately chose Ms. Vashi due to her impressive credentials in teaching excellence.

“Ms Vashi is dedicated and passionate about providing a positive and nurturing learning environment for her students. She builds strong relationships and has created a classroom where diversity is celebrated, and students feel valued and respected. She continually demonstrates her commitment to ‘Doing What’s Best for Kids’.”

Congratulations Ms. Vashi and Mr. Clarke!
