(Fort McMurray, AB, September 16, 2021) The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) and Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMPSD) are excited to partner to present a new program for FMPSD students through the MacDonald Island Dance Academy (MIDA).

The new initiative enables FMPSD students from Grades 10 to 12 to earn credits for participating in ballet classes at MIDA. Students can earn 15 credits over three years, and the credits earned in Ballet 15, 25 and 35 can be used towards their high school diploma.

“We are happy to be able to support our students through extra-curricular activities in the community, and awarding them credit through partnerships. The MIDA ballet program aligns with the Alberta Ballet Curriculum, and is a very robust dance initiative composed of projects and exams. Our students are lucky to be able to access such quality programs in our community while also being able to earn credits toward graduation,” noted Annalee Nutter, Assistant Superintendent, FMPSD.

The MacDonald Island Dance Academy offers a full range of dance classes for a variety of age groups and skill levels, and the new ballet credit program is an exciting addition for the academy. Completion of credits for the ballet program includes a requisite number of class hours, as well as completion of assignments based on ballet theory, composition and technical development.

“We are thrilled to partner with FMPSD in presenting this new opportunity to students in our community,” said Jodie Cooper, RRC Director of Sport and Recreation.

“We always welcome the chance to partner with local organizations, and this new ballet program is a wonderful addition to our academy and all that it offers to dancers," added Cooper.
