News Release: FMPSD ‚ÄčAnnounces Temporary Appointments

(Fort McMurray, AB, September 9, 2021) Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMPSD) is pleased to announce two temporary appointments. Cynthia Shelley, Principal of Westwood Community High School will be the new acting Director of Education, and Tifanie Book, Vice Principal, Westwood, will be taking over as the school’s acting Principal. The appointments will be effective on September 13, 2021. Shelley, who has been with FMPSD for 21 years, will be filling in at the Division Office for current Director of Education, Jen Quigley, who will be on leave. 

“I am excited to serve students, families and staff in this new capacity as Acting Director of Education. Over my career, I have had the honour to hold a diverse set of roles including Teacher, Counselor, Vice Principal and Principal. These roles have provided me the opportunity to work with students with diverse needs and backgrounds. I am eager to work with students, parents, staff and community partners in creating meaningful learning opportunities for all students in the Fort McMurray Public School Division.”

Book, who has been with FMPSD since 2006 as a Teacher, Learning Assistance Coordinator, Counsellor, Vice Principal and Coach is looking forward to the new appointment.

“I feel lucky to be part of the Westwood School community and look forward to continuing to support students, staff and families. Westwood has a long standing history of achievement, innovation, and building relationships to help students reach their goals. I am excited to contribute and continue building a strong school culture where all students feel welcome and experience success. The students at Westwood are changing the future and have amazing leadership potential. I am excited to help guide them on their journey and work with fantastic staff who make a difference every day through their connection and care.”

Superintendent Turner congratulated both Shelley and Book.

“Both Cynthia and Tifanie are remarkable FMPSD leaders. They make an incredible team, and have always gone above and beyond for their students, staff, families, and FMPSD. We congratulate them on their new appointments, and thank them for stepping up to ensure educational continuity, high level of leadership, and support for students and families during this time,” noted Jennifer Turner, Superintendent, FMPSD.
