News Release: FMPSD Names Composite High School Gym After Phil Meagher - Retiring this Month

(Fort McMurray, AB, July 6, 2021) He is a Fort McMurray icon, and Mr. Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMPSD) himself - Phil Meagher, our Chief Deputy Superintendent will be retiring on July 30, 2021 after 37 years with the Division! And, to honour him FMPSD has named the Fort McMurray Composite High School main gym - the Phil Meagher Gymnasium.

The announcement was made at a small retirement event at the very venue by FMPSD Superintendent Jennifer Turner. It was attended by Linda Mywaart, Board Chair, and staff from across the Division, who paid tribute to him for his innumerable services to FMPSD and the region.

Meagher began his FMPSD career in 1983 as a substitute teacher, when he moved to town from New Brunswick via Calgary. He has held several positions ranging from Vice Principal, Principal, Coach to Associate Superintendent of Education and now retiring as Chief Deputy Superintendent, HR and Admin - a position he’s held since 2007. He is a well-known name across the region, a Municipal Councillor for over 26 years, an elite athlete - skier, runner, and a perennial volunteer, to name a few highlights.

“Phil has provided FMPSD and the greater community with a lifetime of dedication. His long career has included teaching, coaching, 25 years of hosting Challenge Cup events, supporting students, collaboration with his peers locally and across the province, and supporting families and organizations within our school system. All FMPSD members overtime have received support, guidance, humour, and compassion from him,” noted Jennifer Turner, Superintendent FMPSD.

“Wood Buffalo has also been a recipient of Phil’s commitment to making the community the best place it can be. The Municipality, Birchwood Trails, the Cross Country Ski Club, Arctic Winter Games, Oil Barons Hockey, Snow Angels Snow Shoveling services for seniors and countless other community events, organizations, and individuals would not be the same without the substantial and amazing dedication by Phil Meagher. In appreciation of Phil’s selfless dedication, it is our great honour to recognize his outstanding contribution to FMPSD and to the greater Wood Buffalo community by naming Fort McMurray Composite High School main gymnasium the Phil Meagher Gymnasium. You will be greatly missed Phil, but the legacy you leave here at Composite and in Fort McMurray will live on,” Superintendent Turner enthused.

Meagher, who will remain in Fort McMurray until after the election on October 18, 2021, and then will move to Sundre, Alberta with his wife, Sherri, to be closer to their grandchildren - was touched by the tribute, and shared:

“No one will ever understand how much this honour means to me! It is the gym where I started my career; my wife was part of the first Composite High graduating class in 1977 -  in that gym! All five of my children graduated from that school and have banners in that gym!  I never expected such a wonderful honour. As a matter of fact, I am still a little emotional about it. Thanks is never enough, it was just an amazing honour! Still a little speechless…” he said.

A plaque highlighting the dedication will be installed this fall at the gym.

Congratulations Phil! You will be missed. Thank you for 37 years!
