News Release: FMPSD Thanks Suncor Energy for Their Teepee Gift at Westwood

(Fort McMurray, AB, October 20, 2020) Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMPSD) thanks Suncor Energy for their gift of a Teepee installed at Westwood Community High School on October 15, 2020. The Teepee was raised by the McMurray Métis, and we are grateful to them for their assistance.

The gifting ceremony saw Suncor’s Joy Flett, Advisor, Indigenous & Community Relations, FMPSD Board Chair, Linda Mywaart, and Superintendent Jennifer Turner in attendance along with Suncor/FMPSD administrators and student leaders. Guests were treated to special performances of Jingle and Grass dances by Westview Public School students Brielle and Sawyer Mercredi respectively.

“We are delighted to be able to share this Teepee with FMPSD. The teepees are part of cultural awareness at Suncor. We launched the distribution three years ago for our 50th anniversary,” noted Flett.

“Suncor’s generosity will help us enhance Indigenous Education, not only at Westwood, but across the Division - a priority that remains at the front and centre for FMPSD,” said Superintendent Turner.

“It is our hope that the ceremony this afternoon, this Teepee and the teachings will enhance our understanding of the traditional territories we learn and work on, offer a sense of hope and pride for our Indigenous students and families, and will serve as a visible commitment to the calls to action and reconciliation,” she added.

"On behalf of the Board of Trustees I extend a very sincere thank you to Suncor and the McMurray Métis for giving this Teepee to Westwood. Some key words that stood out for me at the gifting ceremony were family, children, tradition, culture and relationship, all things that align with what we value at FMPSD. Thank you for partnering with us and giving us and our students this rich learning opportunity,” Chair Mywaart enthused.

“Thank you Suncor for the gift of this Teepee, and McMurray Métis for your help. This Teepee will bring our students to a new level of learning, understanding and appreciation for the Indigenous culture as they learn about the values that bring us balance through the spiritual, physical, emotional and mental aspects of life,” shared Cynthia Shelley, Principal, Westwood Community High School.

“We learn from our youth, our Elders and one another. This Teepee will be used as a classroom, a place of peace and enjoyment for our students and our community. On behalf of the students and all the Westwood Community High School stakeholders, we thank you again for this honour,” she added.
