News Release: FMPSD Announces New Superintendent

(Fort McMurray, AB, December 13, 2019) Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMPSD) is pleased to announce the appointment of a new Superintendent of Schools. Jennifer Turner has been chosen following a lengthy, and in-depth, national search process. She will begin on March 1, 2020 following the departure of Superintendent Doug Nicholls, who announced his retirement earlier this year.

Mrs. Turner is currently the Assistant Superintendent for Rocky Mountain School District in British Columbia. She has an extensive 24-year experience in the K-12 field. Registered with both the College of Psychologists in British Columbia and Alberta, Mrs. Turner completed her Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta with a major in secondary Social Studies. She has completed a Master’s degree in Science and completed the BC Education Leadership Council Qualification. She is currently in the second year of the University of Calgary’s Doctoral Program in Education Research with a specialization in K-12 Education Leadership. She is also a long-standing member of the British Columbia Superintendents’ Association and the Canadian Association of School System Administrators. In addition, for the past seven years, Mrs. Turner has been a Practicum and Internship Supervisor for the University of Calgary’s Applied School of Psychology.

“Fort McMurray Public School Division has thrived during the six years of leadership under its current Superintendent, Doug Nicholls and we extend our sincere thanks to him. And now, as we begin a new chapter, the Board welcomes Mrs. Turner as Superintendent of FMPSD. We are confident that her extensive experience, knowledge and leadership will continue to serve our students well in the years ahead. We are eager to introduce her to students, staff, families, and community partners,” said Linda Mywaart, FMPSD Board Chair.

Mrs. Turner began her teaching career in 1996 with the Northern Lights School Division in Alberta later working in Foothills School Division. In an effort to be close to family she moved to the interior of British Columbia spending the initial 10 years in BC with the Boundary School District holding the roles of Psychologist, Principal, and District Principal. Since 2013 she has been in her current role of Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Rocky Mountain District as a member of senior management working closely with the board of education at all board meetings and working sessions and working directly with all 18 schools and their administrative teams. Her work has included the development and implementation of system wide administrative procedures, provision of staff development, recruitment and retention, and engagement with district and school improvement processes. Mrs. Turner has provided leadership and oversight of Health Promoting Schools, Learning Services, Early Years, and Safe Schools for the district. She has consulted extensively for the BC Ministry of Education, serving on the standing committee for curriculum redesign, was a member of the provincial steering committee for graduation literacy assessment, assisted with development the new Early Learning Framework and was the provincial K-12 education representative of a cross-government review of mental health services.

“It is wonderful to be returning to northern Alberta,” Mrs. Turner shared.

“Although I have been away from the north for a number of years, I am excited to return with new skills, experiences, and understanding. It is a privilege to join an exemplary school division such as Fort McMurray Public Schools and I am very much looking forward to learning and working with students, staff, and the community.”

Mrs. Turner is married and has three grown children, two of whom live in Alberta.
