(FORT MCMURRAY, AB - January 12, 2017) Fort McMurray Public School District (FMPSD) has received its largest wildfire donation to date -  $373,677.73 thanks to the Tzu Chi Foundation.

The Vancouver-based Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation, Canada (also known as "Tzu Chi Canada") is involved with charitable and humanitarian services across the globe. The donation will go towards funding the “Leader in Me” program in seven FMPSD schools. Based on seven habits, “Leader in Me” is designed to help teachers develop leadership skills in students.

“I want to thank all our supporters, and volunteers who helped with the Fort McMurray wildfire donations - coin by coin, dollar by dollar. We’ve helped different countries around the world, but this help was needed in Canada, our home. We are happy to support the Fort McMurray Public School District,” said Mr. Mac Miao, Tzu Chi Canada’s Vice CEO.

Doug Nicholls, Superintendent, Fort McMurray Public School District, thanked the Foundation for its fantastic support.

“The incredible donation from Tzu Chi Canada will result in resources being available to either initiate or support seven "Leader in Me" sites in Fort McMurray Public Schools. The generosity of the Foundation will give our schools a clear focus on leadership and will build increased resiliency in our students, staff and parents.”

“The ‘Leader in Me’ program highlights the need to build leadership capacity which our District views as a critical component for the continuous improvement of our schools after the wildfire. Receiving such strong support from Tzu Chi Canada speaks volumes about their members' concern for our students’ and staff members' well-being and for our community. We are so thankful for the Foundation's identification of our needs and for what their donation will mean to the District in the years ahead. This support is exactly what we needed to move forward,” Superintendent Nicholls enthused.

Jeff Thompson, Chair, Board of Trustees, FMPSD and Superintendent Nicholls were on hand in Vancouver to receive the cheque.

"What an incredible support from Tzu Chi Canada. We are grateful for their generosity and hospitality. "Leader in Me" program will be a solid help for our students post-crisis. Implementing it in our schools gives them added opportunity for success. Thank you Tzu Chi Canada for helping us in "Doing What's Best for Kids."
