(Fort McMurray, AB - November 2, 2017) Fort McMurray Public School District congratulates Linda Mywaart, our newly appointed Board Chair on winning two prestigious community awards. She was named to the Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta’s Women of Inspiration series, and awarded “Event Volunteer of the Year,” by the Wood Buffalo Food Bank Association.

Mywaart, who became FMPSD Board Chair by acclamation on October 25, has been a local resident for over 35 years. She chairs the Advisory Committee on Aging, a group she joined in 2014. She set up a Neighborhood Watch in Saprae Creek, volunteers for her church, and The Bridge 91.1’s events. She is an avid volunteer for the Wood Buffalo Food Bank - often seen front and centre at various food drives with her husband. The duo has helped out at the warehouse, and the annual Empty Bowls Festival also.

The Girls Inc., announcement was made on October 31. Ann Dort-MacLean, Executive Director for the group says the idea is to “highlight and acknowledge women in the region who are examples of what girls can aspire to become.”

“Linda is energetic and has a very strong community commitment. Her volunteer work, her interest in making life better for others and her drive to contribute make her an excellent role model for girls. They can see by her example – how important their contribution to their community is and how they too can make a difference. Linda is an obvious choice for our Women of Inspiration – she can and does inspire others to follow in her footsteps,” Dort-MacLean enthuses.

The Food Bank award read the following.

“A long standing member of our community, Linda Mywaart is always ready to help out wherever she can. She has volunteered at the Syncrude Food Drive for longer than any of our current board or staff have been with the Wood Buffalo Food Bank. Every year Linda signs up and shows up for her shifts, as well as monitors our volunteer sign-up for empty spots throughout the weekend and always steps in where we need her. Linda always brings her family and friends along with her, who after experiencing this volunteer event often come on their own the next time. Linda is always stepping up for other events as well, even when we need last minute volunteers, and has been a huge support for us. It is our honour to present the Event Volunteer of the Year Award to Linda Mywaart.”

Chair Mywaart appreciated the awards, and notes “I am honoured and humbled to be recognized in the midst of so many wonderful, giving, and kind people in our region.”

“The example of serving others began with my mom and dad, and has gone on to include numerous other people who model lives of service. I give of myself because it's become part of who I am. I love where I live and am blessed and privileged to give to this community I call home."

She will be inaugurated in the Women of Inspiration series in June 2018 along with 11 other women.

Congratulations Chair Mywaart.
