FMPSD Welcomes New Director of Education
Fort McMurray Public School District (FMPSD) welcomes Merrie-Rae Mitsopoulos as the new Director of Education.
Mitsopoulos, who started her new position on August 1, 2017, joined the District in 2011 as the Coordinator of Instruction. She has served as the Principal of Westview School, and most recently Principal of Dr. K.A. Clark School for the last two years.
“Being a teacher and a school administrator was enjoyable. I look forward to be able to take the skills and apply them in this new role at the District level. I always love to see how different teachers and schools do things and will get the opportunity to work with all our schools,” Mitsopoulos explained.
Her portfolio entails supporting schools in many ways especially in curriculum and instruction.
“Some specific areas for me and the Education Department are continued focus on literacy and numeracy, assisting English Language Learners and FNMI (First Nations, Metis, Inuit) students as well as preparing for the upcoming implementation of the new provincial curriculum. We are excited to have many of our elementary schools become Leader in Me schools this year, which will also be a focus of mine, as well as the continued partnership we have with APPLE Schools.”
“My goal is to help support the schools for continued success for all students. We have so many great things happening right now. There are many opportunities for students to gain new experiences in our schools - in athletics, the arts, leadership and technology, just to name a few, which complement our strong academic programs,” she added.
Welcome to District Office, Merrie-Rae.
