(FORT MCMURRAY, AB - June 16, 2017) Fort McMurray Public School District (FMPSD) congratulates Kristen Craig, École Dickinsfield teacher, who won the coveted Edwin Parr Award recently from the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA).

The annual award is given to six outstanding first-year teachers across the province. Craig won for Zone 2/3. She was in attendance at the banquet in Edmonton; and was pleasantly surprised.

“To be honest, I was shocked. All of the nominees had to be on stage and share a memory about their greatest teaching moment. Every nominee seemed like a winner. They started to announce the second winner, I heard them say “Fort McMurray Public Schools,” and was completely shocked. I didn’t even hear the rest,” shared Craig, who teaches grade four in French Immersion.

Paul Smith, Principal, École Dickinsfield accompanied Craig to the Edwin Parr Awards ceremony. He is proud of her.

“We are truly blessed to have such an exemplary first-year teacher at our school and in our District. Kristen exudes positivity and a love of teaching and not only does she love kids, the kids love her! She is a teacher par excellence and we think she is terrific,” he said.

Indeed, Craig is involved in multiple after-school activities. She coaches volleyball, helps with school plays, and runs a holiday decorating student leadership group.

Doug Nicholls, Superintendent, FMPSD congratulated her.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, and senior leadership, we congratulate Kristen on doing a great job daily for our students. She goes above and beyond inside and outside of the class. The Edwin Parr Award is a well-deserved honour for her. She represents the quality of of the young teachers we are hiring in our District.”

For Craig, teaching is a passion that keeps growing daily.

“I fell in love with my job on the first day. I love that I get to work with my students and in my school daily. This is the first job that I’ve ever had that is never boring, always has something to offer and makes me happy every day,” Craig added.

Congratulations Kristen!
