(FORT MCMURRAY, AB - May 23, 2017) Fort McMurray Public School District (FMSPD) and Fort McMurray Catholic School District (FMCSD) proudly hosted Mr. Gary Ho, CEO, Tzu Chi Canada, Ms. Sophia Tseng, Director of Education, and Ms. Lili Chen, Secretary. The representatives were in town on May 17 and 18. They toured local schools from both districts, where student leaders showcased “The Leader in Me,” programs funded by the group.

The delegation toured Ecole Dickinsfield, Christina Gordon Public School, and St. Anne schools, and was impressed with students who highlighted their public speaking, recycling, composting, and other daily leadership duties.

This January both districts received an almost $700,000 post-wildfire donation for the leadership program, which is designed to help teachers develop leadership skills in students.

Mr. Ho brought greetings on behalf of Tzu Chi Foundation Canada at a joint press conference.

“We are impressed with Fort McMurray’s rebuild. Our volunteers began fundraising as soon as we heard about the wildfires last year. Thank you for hosting us. We give locally for charitable causes, and across the globe for disaster relief, or where the need is most. We give with both hands with service, respect and gratitude,” shared Mr. Ho, who also presented an overview of the Foundation at FMPSD’s Board meeting.

Linda Mywaart, Vice Chair, FMPSD Board of Trustees thanked the group for their generosity.

“This is a remarkable day that is bringing us together in gratitude. We are grateful to the Tzu Chi Foundation for its generous donation of over $700,000 for both districts. Fort McMurray Public School District has already made sure your donation is hard at work in seven schools. What a difference Tzu Chi’s commitment will make to Fort McMurray Public students and staff as we continue to work through the effects of the wildfire.”

"The impact and legacy of this generous gift from the Tzu Chi Foundation will be evident in our community for many years and generations to come. It is a beautiful reminder of the compassion and caring our community continues to receive. Through ‘The Leader In Me,” we can pay it forward exponentially,” noted Paula Galenzoski, Fort McMurray Catholic School Board Chair.
