Kindergarten Open House - March 23 and 24

Kindergarten Open House events will be held across Fort McMurray in all our elementary schools. We have convenient day and evening slots: Thursday, March 23 runs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday, March 24 will be from 9 a.m. to Noon. Dave McNeilly Public School, slated to open this fall will host their open house at Walter and Gladys Hill Public School.

Parents/guardians can visit any school with their little ones, and can register for the 2017-18 school year on the spot. Children must be four years old on or before March 1, 2017 to register for Kindergarten classes, which will begin on September 5, 2017.

"The Kindergarten Open House is an ideal time for parents and children to have the chance to meet the classroom teacher, the school principal, tour the classroom, and the school. The parent is a child's first educator. When children begin Kindergarten, parents and the teacher form a partnership to support learning at home and at school. In Kindergarten, children learn through play and develop skills such as independence, decision-making, problem-solving, creativity, and relating to others. Young learners establish a love for school, while developing early literacy and numeracy skills, environment and community awareness, citizenship and identity, personal and social responsibility, and creative expression through meaningful experiences," explains Rhonda Blanchette, Coordinator of Early Inclusive Education.

"In early learning programs, the multidisciplinary team provides early intervention supports for children in developing their fine motor, gross motor, and speech and language skills. Visitors to the Open House may have the opportunity to meet some of our multidisciplinary team including Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, and Physical Therapists. Attending an Open House gives families a chance to make connections with the staff and the school community. Each of our elementary schools offer Kindergarten.  There are some locations that offer alternative programming as well, including French Immersion, Christian, Islamic, Reggio Inspired, and Montessori," adds Blanchette.
